7/27/11 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Wednesday

So guess what I just discovered on our organic fat-free milk label?!  Our milk has 12g of sugar in ONE serving!  That's insane to me.  Now I feel like I should be on the hunt for a new milk.  Does regular milk contain that much sugar?  Yep, I just looked it up and it's the same.  Holy smokes that is a lot of sugar.  Remember, with my diet and Jenny Craig's philosophy you want as little sugar as possible!  Well, I found that regular milk has 1.1 times less the amount of sugar but 30 times more fat.  This site by no means is reliable but I found the explanation simplistic and interesting:  Fat-free vs. whole milk.  If what this blogger writes is true then I don't need to worry about this kind of sugar because lactose is a natural sugar and the reason whole milk has less is because the fat makes more liquid.  In order to get a cup of fat-free milk to be the same amount of liquid as a cup of whole milk, you have to add more regular milk to the fat-free which means taking out the fat but a higher amount of lactose sugar.  I may be confusing you, if so, go to that link because it was really interesting.  To the point, I'm not going to worry about my fat-free milk because it's a natural sugar that is easier for the body to process without being a danger such as the possible effects of artificial sweeteners.
