Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a common type of muscle pain that is often a result of a traumatic or repetitive injury that was undiagnosed or undertreated. The hallmarks of this condition are called trigger points and are small spasms within the large muscle. They are different from muscle spasms in that they do not involve the entire muscle, but they can certainly be as painful!
Recent research has shown that 95% of people with chronic pain disorders have some degree of this condition. This type of pain is generally dull and achy and increases over time. It can cause headaches, neck, back pain and is very common in the shoulder area.
Deactivation of these trigger points can be done very easily and willreduce pain and increase function. This can be accomplished with simple manual medicine techniques along with trigger point ischemic compression.
